Between the all-inclusive resort and the private apartment rental sits a third format few travellers know about before they reach Djerba: the aparthotel, or serviced residence. The space and kitchen of an apartment, with the services of a hotel. Here is how it compares with the alternatives, and who it genuinely suits.
What an aparthotel actually is
An aparthotel, or serviced residence, rents out complete homes rather than rooms: each suite has its own terrace, fitted kitchenette and living space, while the property still runs like a hotel, with housekeeping, a front desk, a restaurant and a shared pool.
In practice that means you can have breakfast whenever you want, keep milk for a child, eat out without having prepaid full board, and still have someone to talk to when the air conditioning starts making an odd noise.
Aparthotel, resort or rental: how to choose
The three formats do not serve the same trip:
- The all-inclusive resort: everything is on site and prepaid. Comfortable if you do not plan to leave, frustrating if you came to see the island. These properties often run to 300 or 500 rooms.
- The private rental: space and independence, but no service. No housekeeping, nobody on site when something goes wrong, and quality that depends entirely on the owner.
- The aparthotel: the space and kitchen of a rental, with the housekeeping, front desk and shared areas of a hotel. It is the format that gives the most freedom without pushing all the risk onto the traveller.
What "with a kitchenette" means in practice
This is the detail with the biggest effect on a stay in Djerba, and the one most often underestimated. A kitchenette lets you keep a child's routine, manage an allergy or a diet without negotiating at every meal, come back from the Midoun market with fish and vegetables, and avoid paying for three hotel breakfasts a day.

A residence with a pool in Midoun
A pool is not decorative in Djerba: from June to September it is what makes the middle of the day liveable. Ours is surrounded by olive trees and sized for a residence rather than a complex, which means there are still free sunloungers at 4pm.
Alongside it are the Tazzert restaurant, cooking the way local families do, and the La Tavla rooftop, open in the late afternoon over the sunset with a regular music programme.
Who this format suits best
- Families: suites of 65 to 85 m2 sleep 4 to 6 without booking two rooms, and the kitchenette settles the question of young children’s meals.
- Longer stays: beyond a week, having a kitchen and a real living space changes the comfort entirely.
- Travellers who want to see the island: in Midoun you are in a real town, not enclosed in a hotel compound twenty minutes from everything.
- Off-season trips: between November and March, a year-round residence with a restaurant stays pleasant where many beach properties wind down.
Midoun as an address
Midoun is the island's second town and the liveliest out of season: shops open all year, a Friday morning market, cafes used by locals. The east coast beaches are minutes away, Djerbahood and Houmt Souk about fifteen minutes' drive each, the airport around twenty.

The suites
Ten suites in all, built in the traditional Djerbian style around the garden. The Junior Family Suite is 65 m2 and sleeps up to 4. The Duplex is 85 m2 across two levels with a panoramic view and sleeps up to 6. All have a private terrace, kitchenette, air conditioning, free WiFi and a safe.
