Where to stay in Djerba: the area by area guide

Last updated: July 5, 2026

Djerba is an island, but where you stay shapes the whole trip. In short: Houmt Souk for the old town and the markets, the Sidi Mahrez tourist zone for the big beach resorts, Midoun for local island life a few minutes from the east coast beaches, Erriadh (Djerbahood) for street art, Aghir and the south east for quiet and kitesurfing. Here is how to choose, area by area.

Getting your bearings

Djerba-Zarzis International Airport sits in the north west of the island. Houmt Souk, the capital, is on the north coast. The tourist zone stretches along Sidi Mahrez beach in the north east. Midoun, the island's second town, lies slightly inland, about ten minutes from the eastern beaches. Erriadh and its open air museum Djerbahood are in the center, Guellala and its potters in the south. Distances stay short: you can cross the island by taxi or car in under an hour.

Houmt Souk: for the old town and the markets

This is Djerba's historic and commercial heart: the souk, the fondouks (former caravanserais turned charming hotels), the fishing port, and a heritage recognized by UNESCO since 2023. Stay here and you can wander out on foot in the evening and browse the stalls in the morning. The trade-off: the beaches are not on your doorstep. Ideal for a culture-focused first visit or a two or three night stop.

The Sidi Mahrez tourist zone: for the beach above all

The long white sand beach in the north east is lined with club hotels and large resorts, mostly all inclusive. It is the natural choice for beach-only holidays and families who want everything on site. The flip side: you stay inside the resort, see little of the island, and the atmosphere is that of large international complexes.

Midoun: to live Djerba, not just visit it

Midoun is the island's second town: a weekly market on Fridays, cafes, shops and local life all year round. Staying in or around Midoun is the balance many travelers are looking for without knowing it: the authenticity of a real town, the east coast beaches a few minutes away, and human-scale addresses rather than 400-room complexes.

That is the choice we made at Jardins de Toumana: a small residence of ten suites in Midoun, around twenty minutes from the airport. Suites of 65 to 85 sqm with a private terrace and kitchenette, a pool set among olive trees, the Tazzert restaurant cooking the way local families do, and the La Tavla rooftop for the end of the day. Booked directly with us, with no middleman.

Erriadh and Djerbahood: for art and village life

Erriadh is home to Djerbahood, the open air street art museum known far beyond Tunisia, a few kilometers from the La Ghriba synagogue. A handful of discreet guesthouses take travelers in, but most visit for half a day from Houmt Souk or Midoun.

Aghir and the south east: for calm and kitesurfing

The south east coast is wilder: quieter beaches, the Seguia lagoon for kitesurfing, boat trips towards Flamingo Island. Little infrastructure, plenty of peace. Choose it if you are after silence, provided you have a car or are happy to use taxis.

Club hotel, guesthouse or aparthotel?

  • Club hotels in the tourist zone: all inclusive, entertainment, package prices.
  • Guesthouses (restored houchs and fondouks): charm and immersion, often without a pool or an on-site restaurant.
  • The charming aparthotel, in between: the space and independence of an apartment with the services of a hotel. That is the format of Jardins de Toumana in Midoun.

One piece of advice that applies everywhere: book directly with the property. You get the best conditions and your special requests are handled by the people who will actually welcome you.

When to visit Djerba

April to June and September to October: ideal weather, warm sea, a peaceful island. July and August: high season, lively and hot. November to March: mild winters, beautiful light, gentler rates. The island lives all year round.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best area to stay in Djerba?

It depends on the trip: Houmt Souk for culture and markets, the Sidi Mahrez tourist zone for a beach-only holiday, Midoun for the balance of local life, nearby beaches and human-scale addresses. For a first visit, Midoun is the most versatile choice.

Do I need to rent a car in Djerba?

Not necessarily. Taxis are plentiful and affordable, and many properties arrange transfers and excursions. A car remains useful for exploring the south of the island freely.

How far are the hotels from the airport?

The island is compact: count 15 to 30 minutes by road to Houmt Souk, the tourist zone or Midoun. Jardins de Toumana is about 20 minutes from Djerba-Zarzis airport, with transfers available on request.

How many nights should I plan in Djerba?

Four to seven nights let you combine beaches, Houmt Souk, Djerbahood and a trip to the south. In an aparthotel with a kitchenette, the island also lends itself very well to long stays.

Is it better to book direct or through a platform?

Direct, whenever possible: no middleman commission, conditions at least as good, and your special requests handled by the team that welcomes you.
